Strategic withdrawals – for safety, for ministry.

Matthew 4:12-23

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali – 14 to fulfil what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 ‘Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles –
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.’[a]

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’

Jesus calls his first disciples

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus heals the sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people.

‘When Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.’ Matthew 4:12

There are significant withdrawals in the beginning of Matthew, and all connected to words of prophecy. The wise men withdraw from Bethlehem ‘another way’, so they don’t tell Herod what he wants to know. Joseph immediately takes his family to safety in Egypt, thus fulfilling a prophecy later, “Out of Egypt I called my son.’

Now, after the arrest of John the Baptist, Jesus withdraws from Nazareth, over the hills to Capernaum, in prophecy, ‘Galilee of the gentiles. There he begins his ministry, not only preaching, teaching and healing, but also calling his first disciples.

It’s tricky, balancing the need to be true to yourself and your needs, and staying connected to others. We all know the cost of being too compliant, or too bossy. It’s a challenge in our intimate relationships, our friendships and our church families. It’s worth it, to find what works. Healthy, loving relationships are vital for each one of us. Our needs are met, and we bless and set others free.

It’s tricky, working out whether to play it safe, or to take a stand. I believe the Holy Spirit works with our spirit to guide us. You actually have your own preferred ways, in which you know that it is God is working inside you, or calling you. And if God wants to show you something new, God will do that.

Jesus withdrew, in order to build others up, to firmly establish the kingdom of heaven, so that, at the right time, he could go to Jerusalem, and offer himself on the cross, to bring forgiveness and healing to all of creation. He knew that the Holy Spirit, working with his disciples, would keep the work going. It would be impossible to stop.

The light of Christ is now working in and through you. You are part of the kingdom of heaven, right here and now. Enjoy.
