When the Pharisees critiqued the disciples for not washing their hands before they ate, they weren’t thinking of hygiene, like we are. They are concerned about ritual cleanliness, and showing respect to God by keeping the teachings of the elders.
Jesus challenged them about what was going on inside their hearts. ‘Out of the heart comes lust, theft, murder, greed, envy, slander, pride, folly.’ (Mark 7:22). How do we clean our hearts? Only Jesus can do that for us. Baptism is deep cleaning for each one of us.
